FAQs

The smart home devices that make sense are the ones that simplify your life at home, increase convenience and help save energy costs. Automated control of heating and lighting can be tailored to your needs so that these are taken care of for you. There is a variety of different types of devices that offer many possibilities for efficient automation.

FRITZ!Box models with a DECT base station support smart home devices with the DECT ULE/HAN FUN standard, and several models also support the Zigbee standard. The FRITZ!Smart Gateway can add Zigbee to a FRITZ!Box and increase the number of possible DECT ULE devices. Here you will find an overview of compatible Zigbee devices from other manufacturers.

The first differentiation is between hub and decentralized smart home solutions. In the case of FRITZ! Smart Home, the FRITZ!Box functions and the hub that controls smart home devices. Decentralized smart home solutions work without any hub; devices communicate with each other directly.

Smart home devices generally communicate wirelessly using a radio standard like DECT ULE, Zigbee, Z-Wave, Thread, Bluetooth or Wi-Fi, or else over wires, e.g. via powerline or Ethernet. In combination with FRITZ! devices, smart home generally means devices with DECT ULE or Zigbee.

What is a smart home – and how does it work in practice?

A smart home system consists of devices that support automation in everyday life. It networks household appliances, lighting, heating, security systems or electronic entertainment devices with each other so that they can be controlled automatically via apps, voice control or routines.

The FRITZ! Smart Home has a hub for central control – in this case, the FRITZ!Box. It communicates with the individual smart home devices using the DECT ULE radio standard, and some models also via the Zigbee standard. With the FRITZ!Smart Gateway additional devices can be integrated via DECT and Zigbee, and also via Matter to operate the devices via voice control.

Smart home devices can be switchable sockets, window sensors, radiator controls, switches, lights, cameras, and much more. The settings to control them are incorporated om FRITZ!OS, the operating system of the FRITZ!Box, where all automatic actions are defined. Here you define, for instance, the times at which the radiators should heat. Or that a radiator be turned down whenever the window contact signals an open window. The switchable sockets can also be assigned to time profiles and have routines configured.

The FRITZ! Smart Home is an example of system integration, as FRITZ! relies on open standards and allows the integration of smart home devices from other manufacturers. Island solutions, in contrast, work with their own ‘proprietary’ standards to create a closed smart home universe consisting of devices from one manufacturer.

What advantages do smart home systems offer in everyday life?

Smart home solutions can provide for more security and convenience in day-to-day life. They can also help you reduce energy costs.

Do you ever forget to turn the lights off when you leave home? Then install a door contact and link it to an intelligent lighting system. Smart home products like motion sensors can also automatically active a nightlight so that you never have to find your way in the dark. Cameras allow you to view your home when your on the go. Lights can be simulated with random switching during holidays to increase security against break-ins.

The need for more convenience is a strong argument for a smart home solution. This way smart lighting scenarios can be realized, difficult-to-reach sockets operated by switch, and radiator controls are taken over by a specified time profile. These are just a few examples of the practical utility of smart home solutions.

What are the advantages of smart home devices from FRITZ!?

The advantage of smart home solutions from FRITZ! is that your data remain secure in your home network, all FRITZ! devices are integrated seamlessly into the FRITZ!Box home network, and particular value is placed on energy efficiency.

With MyFRITZ! your smart home is at your disposal – simply and securely. For smart home products from FRITZ! do not need any cloud services. This way your data privacy is protected. There are no unnecessary connections to external servers. Your smart home with FRITZ! will keep working even during an internet outage.

FRITZ! devices are perfectly coordinated with each other, and with the FRITZ!Box as the hub, they realize the full potential of FRITZ!OS – the operating system for the entire home network. This way one device can be controlled automatically as soon as another device reaches a specified condition. Compatibility is a matter of course with FRITZ!

FRITZ! Smart Home devices work energy-efficiently and use low-energy DECT radio to save on electricity and batteries. When all devices are controlled centrally, even more energy savings are possible. With the FRITZ!DECT 200 smart plug you can read the energy consumption of a device directly and switch it off automatically during high standby consumption. Or link your lighting to the front door with the FRITZ!DECT 350 sensor so that all lights switch off automatically when you leave home.

Compatibility and extension – which devices can be integrated?

The FRITZ!Box allows all connections to smart home systems or devices via the DECT ULE radio standard and some models also via Zigbee.

With the FRITZ!Smart Gateway you can add the Zigbee and Matter standards to a FRITZ!Box to allow the integration of a plethora of devices from other manufacturers. Here you will find an overview of compatible Zigbee devices from other manufacturers.

Via the open Matter communication standard, controllers such as Amazon Alexa, Google Home, or other Matter controllers can be integrated and you can use voice control from other providers in your smart home. For example, you can operate your FRITZ! radiator control by voice or switch an intelligent FRITZ! sockets with a Matter-compatible motion sensor. You can continue to use all of your FRITZ! automations such as templates, scenes and routines. You have endless possibilities – all kinds of different scenarios can be realized for your smart home devices.

Can I save energy with a smart home?

Yes, you can also save energy with FRITZ! Smart Home products:
Radiator controls regulate the temperature automatically, smart plugs switch devices on only when they're needed, and with the FRITZ!Box user interface or FRITZ!App Smart Home you can always keep track of the status of any device.

Saving energy in the FRITZ!Smart Home:

  • Radiator controls: FRITZ!DECT 302 helps you custom-heat your rooms, saving energy and costs. With a detailed time profile you can specify exactly when the heating should be on and when it shouldn't. These settings can even be adjusted from on the go. You're spontaneously taking an extra week of holiday? No problem, simply switch the heating off for another week using FRITZ!App Smart Home.
  • Switchable socket: With FRITZ!DECT 200 you can have devices switched on and off completely automatically. After all, keeping devices on standby for long periods wastes energy. Be it by schedule, using the FRITZ!DECT 440 switch, FRITZ!Fon, the FRITZ!App Smart Home or on FRITZ!DECT 200 itself – you as flexible as possible.
  • Smart light: Your intelligent lighting system can also be integrated to save energy. Here you can also create time profiles and use routines triggered by motion sensors or door/window contacts to have compatible Zigbee lights switched by FRITZ! automatically. Then the lights will only be on when they're needed.

All of these smart home solutions do more than make your home more comfortable. They also reduce energy consumption and thus protect the environment and your wallet.
