FRITZ!Box reports "PPPoE error"
The FRITZ!Box cannot establish an internet connection in router mode. One of the following error messages is displayed in the event log of the FRITZ!Box:
- "PPPoE error: DSL synchronization lost [...]"
- "PPPoE error: Incorrect parameter [...]"
- "PPPoE error: Incorrect service name [...]"
- "PPPoE error: Illegal packet from PPPoE server [...]"
- "PPPoE error: PPPoE server reports a system error [...]"
- "PPPoE error: PPPoE server reports a problem [...]"
- "PPPoE error: Unknown error [...]"
- "PPPoE error: Timeout [...]"
Note:All instructions on configuration and settings given in this guide refer to the latest FRITZ!OS for the FRITZ!Box.
1 Installing the latest FRITZ!OS for the FRITZ!Box
- Install the latest FRITZ!OS on the FRITZ!Box.
2 Checking DSL synchronization
The following step is only necessary if the FRITZ!Box is connected directly to a DSL line:
- Click "System" in the FRITZ!Box user interface.
- Click "Event Log" in the "System" menu.
- Select "Internet Connection" from the drop-down list.
- If the message "DSL is not available" or "DSL not responding" is displayed before the PPPoE errors, follow the steps in our guide DSL connection drops frequently.
3 Adjusting the settings for a Vodafone internet connection
In some cases, the FRITZ!Box cannot correctly configure all of the connection parameters for an internet connection from Vodafone in Germany. Therefore, use the "Modem-Installationscode" (MIC) from Vodafone to reconfigure the internet connection. If you did not receive a "Modem-Installationscode", select "Other internet service provider" to manually configure the internet connection instead:
Configuring the internet connection with a "Modem-Installationscode" (MIC)
The following step is only necessary if you received a "Modem-Installationscode" from Vodafone:
- Click "Wizards" in the FRITZ!Box user interface.
- Click on "Configure the Internet Connection" in the "Wizards" menu.
- Select the provider "Vodafone" from the drop-down list "Internet service provider".
- Enable the option "Einrichtung mit Modem-Installations-Code (Empfohlen)" and click "Next".
- Follow the wizard's instructions and click "Next.
Adjusting the VLAN settings for your Vodafone internet connection
The following step is only necessary if you did not receive a "Modem-Installationscode" from Vodafone:
- Click "Internet" in the FRITZ!Box user interface.
- Click "Account Information" in the "Internet" menu.
- In the "Internet service provider" section, select "more internet service providers" from the drop-down list and then select "other internet service provider" from the second drop-down list.
- Enable the option "Connection to a DSL line" in the "Connect via" area.
- Enter the account information you received from Vodafone in the relevant fields in the "Internet Connection" section.
- Click "Change Connection Settings", enable the option "Use VLAN for internet access", and enter "7" in the field "VLAN ID".
- Enable the option "Set manually" in the "DSL ATM Settings" section.
- Enter "2" in the field "VPI" and "32" in the field "VCI".
- Click "Apply" to save the settings.
4 Adjusting the settings for your internet connection
- Click "Internet" in the FRITZ!Box user interface.
- Click "Account Information" in the "Internet" menu.
- Check whether your internet service provider is displayed in the "Internet Service Provider" section. If your provider is not displayed, select "more internet service providers" first.
- If your internet service provider is displayed:
- Select your internet service provider.
- Enter the internet account information you received from your internet service provider in the relevant fields in the "Internet Connection" section.
- Click "Apply" to save the settings.
- If your internet service provider is not displayed:
- Select "other internet service provider".
- Enter the internet account information you received from your internet service provider in the relevant fields in the "Internet Connection" section.
- Click "Change connection settings".
- If your internet service provider requires you to use a VLAN ID, enable the option "Use VLAN for internet access" and enter the VLAN ID.
- Enable the option "Set manually" in the "DSL ATM Settings" section.
- Enter the parameters required by your internet service provider in the "VCI" and "VPI" fields.
- Enable the option "PPPoE".
- Click "Apply" to save the settings.

- Contact your internet service provider.
